To move, or not to move

Life is always about listing the priorities and choosing what is important. When we decide to move from one city to another, we have to evaluate the situation in hand and act accordingly. 

What are the things we want to take along and is it worth moving it? 

That is the billion dollar question. Precious, rare, memorable and items with which we have emotional bonding are exceptions to these evaluations, because we may not be ready to part with certain items. The rest of the items have to be moved only if their utility is more than the cost and the efforts involved. There is no point in moving an item if it could be newly bought in our new city of living. If don’t plan well, we might end up spending more money in moving an item, than the actual cost of purchasing it.

What should be considered to decide whether or not to move an item?  

• When moving to a new place we should also consider the fact that the valuable item we are moving with us is going to be of any use to us. As an example, if we are moving with an air-conditioner which may have cost us a considerable amount, but if the city we are moving to does not require an air-conditioner, the moving cost is not worth it. The space it would occupy, the cost involved in moving and the depreciation of the condition till we may require it again have to be carefully observed before taking a decision on moving it.

• An item which is not easily available in our new place of living or the cost of replacement is high; in these cases those items may have to be moved to the new city. It is important to know about our new place of living to be able to decide whether to move such items or not. Knowledge about the city and conversing with the habitants of the city will be crucial in this aspect.

• An item with high utility and high cost, but requires a huge payment of duties and taxes. If this would be the case, it is highly advisable to avoid moving with the item. It might lead to unwanted cost and formalities to move with such items.

• Certain items or goods may be unlawful in certain countries, so we may have no other choice but to make alternate arrangements for such items. It is highly risky to attempt to sneak in such items which may result in serious violations and issues with the law of the land.

• Rare artifacts which may attract heavy taxes could be preserved in countries where we would settle back permanently. Because they may be very precious and irreplaceable, but by retaining them in our own country we may reduce the cost and risk involved in moving.

The bottom-line of moving the items from a city to another is the utility involved, this impacts the decision making. A horse worth $10000 which ended up chewing currency worth $40000 cannot be valued at $50000. It is not about how much it cost us; rather it is about what utility it has. A clear road map is required while moving to minimize the cost and effort of moving. Because an unnecessary item not only cause an additional cost of moving but also kills the space in your new home.
